Litar Foundation

Litar is a place for literature and its mediation in Zurich. The foundation aims to set accents, discover new things and bring little-known works into the discussion. To this end, Litar works with programs that run over several years and encompass different formats.
The program focus “litafrika” deals with the literatures of the African continent in the form of exhibitions, events, publications and intercontinental collaborations: the starting point was the acquisition of the collection of articles by the Swiss journalist and theologian Al Imfeld (1935-2017). The collection was indexed in 2020/21 and can be consulted at Litar. A major focus was the “litafrika” exhibition trilogy jointly conceived by Litar and Strauhof: three exhibitions that provided access to the literatures of the African continent from different perspectives. The exhibitions were shown at Museum Strauhof in Zurich from 2022 to 2024. www.litar.ch

Basel University Library
During his lifetime, Al Imfeld donated his extensive library of fiction and non-fiction books on Africa to Basel University Library. The wealth of titles can be viewed by entering “Imfeld” in the “Local note” section of the swisscovery Basel search mask (www.ub.unibas.ch ).
